THIS has got to be one of the most exciting student welcome events yet, as the Melbourne City Council kicks off the new semester with a Lady Gaga-inspired fashion show on Saturday July 30 at City Square.
The event has already generated plenty of interest, with hundreds of students both local and international responding to the casting call, which closed last week. Auditions are currently underway.
Organisers say the idea was birthed out of the Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, where many students volunteered behind-the-scenes.
And to pull off the Gaga-themed catwalk spectacular, they have sought the help of choreographer John Gray, the Academy of Makeup, and Australia’s leading alternative designers like GeoMythik, Le Lash Designs and Dark Muse Corsetry from the Alt-Designers Hub, Worn Wild.
After the fashion show, students will get a chance to hang out, mix and mingle, catch roving performers in action, take part in hands-on workshops and activities, and bag some freebies.
Students can also take the opportunity to find out more about Melbourne and services available to them, as well as visit booths set up by the Melbourne City Council, the Australian Federation of International Students and “The Couch” International Student Centre.
The Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome is free, and will be held on Saturday July 30, 2011 from 2 to 5pm at City Square, on the corner of Swanston and Collins streets in the Melbourne CBD.
