Living on the EDGE: Estela Leong

What’s your name, and how old are you?

My name is Estela Leong and I am 19 years old.

Where are you from? Where and what course or program are you doing?

I am from Macau SAR, China. It is a special administrated region of China. I am currently doing Bachelor of Commerce in the University of Melbourne majoring in Accounting and Finance.

How long have you been in Melbourne for and why did you choose to come to Melbourne? Did you come alone or with family?

I came here alone and I have been studying in Melbourne for more than 2 years. The reason why I chose Melbourne is that I love the diversity of cultures and the youthful energy in Melbourne city.

And what are expecting to get from the EDGE program?

To be equipped to be a successful leader. In addition to that, to apply all the skills I have learnt to a practical situation and to perfect them.

What does leadership mean to you?

It is the ability to lead a group to achieve a common goal by maximising the potential of every member’s skills and abilities.

What or who do you draw inspiration from, and why?

I draw inspiration from all the innovative entrepreneurs all over the world, especially Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs. I love innovative ideas and the different ways of thinking. I believe the way people live, which is the standard perception of the world, may not be the best way that benefit everyone in the world.

If you could champion one cause for international students in Melbourne, what would it be?

The unreasonable sustained increase in school fees and the huge gap between international and local school fees.

What, in your opinion, is the most common misunderstanding/stereotype that people have of international students in Melbourne?

International students are rich as they can afford the expensive school fees and high rent. This is not true of everyone.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love to read news from around the world and keep myself up-to-date. I also like to spend some time alone and think or plan about things that are happening.

What are your other talents/hobbies outside the classroom?

I’ve been a ballet dancer for more than 13 years. Also, I am a choir singer and sport lover, especially ball games.

Where is your favourite spot to hang out in Melbourne?

Coffee shops along Lygon street. The atmosphere is simply fantastic and helps me relax.

What song gets you pumped or excited? Think Eye of the Tiger or Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor” or any Bon Jovi track.

Halleluja and Amazing Grace by Il Divo

If I had a million dollars I would… use the money to invest. I will open a new company to gather innovative people to produce their creative products that can benefit the world. The other project is to build a training centre with the latest technology and teaching method for students who want to be a leader in different fields in the future.

If I only had $5 I would… spend the money to sustain my life and use all my transferable skills to find a job as soon as possible.
