IN this week’s edition, Catherine May searches out a number of European cultural celebrations, an exhibition to entice your inner travel bug and fashion markets in the northern suburbs.

Audi Festival of German Films
Runs until Monday 30, around town
This weekend draws the Audi Festival of German Films to a close. If you’re craving a bit of European screen culture then head to one of several screenings at either Kino Cinemas or Palace Cinemas. Prices vary, so check their website for more details before you set off.
Australia and New Zealand Travel Spectacular
10am – 5pm, Sunday 29, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre
Bored of Melbourne? You really shouldn’t be – there’s always heaps to do here – but if you’re looking to explore more of the country and its neighbour while you’re studying here, then this free expo might be a source of inspiration. The event will give you access to exclusive discounts, and if nothing else it will save you hours of Googling different tour operators, hotels and airfares.
Hopak in the Park
Saturday 28, Sidney Myer Music Bowl
Melbourne truly is a hive of cultural activity. Last week we suggested a trip to the Persian Fair and this week it’s Ukraine’s turn in the spotlight. The focus is on traditional dancing with more than 300 dancers expected to attend from across Australia to perform Cossack dances, with live music also being played throughout the day. It’s a ticketed event, so book online before you go.
North Melbourne Market
10am – 3pm, Sunday 29, The Lithuanian Club, Errol Street, $2 Entry
With 70 stalls crammed inside this maze of a building, there’ll be plenty of hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. Last month’s event saw stalls offering everything from macarons to quirky threads and more of the same is expected this weekend. If you go to the market and fancy brunch (especially if you’re a less enthusiastic friend/boyfriend) then be sure to swing by the nearby Di Bella Roasting House for some of the city’s finest coffee and crumpets you won’t forget for a while.
Take 2 Markets
10am – 3pm, Sunday 29, Northcote Town Hall
If you’re even further north of the river, then Northcote Town Hall will be hosting a similar event. Entry is a dollar more expensive at $3, but organisers promise designer gear without designer price tags as well as the expected flurry of vintage clothing.
