THIS festive season, experience a uniquely Australian Christmas at comedy show, A Very Woggy Xmas. Grace Yew tells you how you can see these multicultural comedians in action.
A Very Woggy Xmas Comedy is coming to Melbourne for ten performances – starting December 17.
For the uninitiated, the Australian slang term “wog” is used to refer to post-World War II immigrants and their descendants from Europe, the Mediterranean and the Balkans, sometimes in a derogatory manner.
But A Very Woggy Xmas is one of many fine examples of these Australians overcoming stereotypes and proudly asserting a distinct cultural identity.
Now in its 12th year running, the event features a line-up of some of Australia’s best multicultural stand-up comedians, including Joe Avati (fresh off a successful Canadian tour), Tahir (audience favourite Habib of Fat Pizza fame) and Gabriel Rossi.
All three have been credited for their insightful observational comedy and their knack for engaging audiences.
Rossi, who created the “woggy Christmas” concept, recently made headlines for criticising the Australian Big Brother‘s lack of multicultural contestants.
The three veterans will be joined by a team of upcoming comedy talents, comprised of John Burgos, Dave Ivkovic, Don Tran and Khaled Khalafalla.
Full of festive cheer and energetic political satire, A Very Woggy Xmas promises to be the multicultural comedy of the season.
A Very Woggy Xmas will be showing at The Comics Lounge in North Melbourne from December 17 to December 22. Tickets are on sale now here.
