Mechanic On Duty
Until November 24 – The Garage Gallery, South Yarra

Australian construction artist Tanya Stubbles is returning to Melbourne to showcase the latest works in her “On The Road” series. This sculpture exhibition, called Mechanic On Duty, is a collection of retro car scraps which have been welded together to form weird and wonderful, abstract landscapes. The event is free to check out and you can find out more about Stubbles work and the exhibition itself from her website.

Mongolian Bling
Saturday November 24 – ACMI

It’s hip-hop that’s moving post-communist Mongolia in the 21st century. At least, that’s the premise of Mongolian Bling, the new documentary by Violet Town filmmaker Benj Binks. Mongolian Bling tells the story of young rappers in the country’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, as they “strive to salvage their flailing democracy”. The film premieres in Australia at ACMI this Saturday night and is a must see for all hip-hop fans. Tickets are available from ACMI.

Roller Derby Extreme
Friday November 23- Hisesnse Arena

As far as spectacles go, there’s surely nothing like the sight of dozens of roller skaters clattering into each other around a velodrome. Anyone who’s seen the Drew Barrymore-directed Ellen Page starring film, Whip It, knows roller derby girls are beyond tough. In fact, insane might be more accurate. If you think the dangers of this ludicrous sport are exaggerated, come and see for yourself as the best US players hit up Hisense Arena (and most likely each other) for Roller Derby Extreme. It’s bound to be, well, extreme. You can snap up tickets from Ticketek.
