With the success of last year’s monster-slaying flick, Pacific Rim, one of 2014’s most anticipated blockbusters, Godzilla, looks set to be another gigantic hit when it crashes into Australian cinemas on May 15.
This year will mark the 60th anniversary for the prolific beast as he made his first appearance in the influential Japanese classic of the same name all the way back in 1954.
Though this isn’t the first time that Godzilla has been seen outside Japan (the first attempt to bring the reptilian monster to western audiences came in 1998), the 2014 update looks to be much closer to the original film.
Director Gareth Edward’s new revision of Godzilla’s mythology is in many ways both a reboot and a sequel to the original 1954 classic as early trailers for the new film have suggested that both films link to one another.
Trailers have also shown that Godzilla will not just be fighting humanity but also against other creatures as well; no doubt paying homage to the less-serious sequels that followed the original Japanese film.
Godzilla will star Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene), Juliette Binoche (Certified Copy), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine) and David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck).
