University of Melbourne takes lion’s share of international student enrolments

THE University of Melbourne proves its popularity with the highest number of international students studying on campus in Australia. Darren Boon reports.

The University of Melbourne has the largest number of international students studying on campus, according to latest figures released by Australian Education International (AEI).

The AEI research snapshot showed the University of Melbourne had 14,165 onshore international students in 2013, accounting for 27.1 per cent of the total university population.

The University of New South Wales was second with 13,123 onshore international students, followed by Monash University with 12,271 onshore international students.

The University of Sydney and University of Queensland were also popular with international students, with more than 10,000 international students enrolled in the respective universities.

Other universities with a high number of international students included Macquarie University and RMIT University.

However, according to the same report, total international student enrolments in Australia in the higher education sector dropped by 0.8 per cent in 2013.
