The Weekender: January 29 – 31

THIS weekend, get a start on those 1,000 origami cranes in Docklands, enjoy live music or a movie under the moon, or head to Footscray to partake in Lunar New Year festivities.

Crafternoons with the Melbourne Origami Group
Saturday, January 30 (12.00pm – 2.00pm) | Library at The Dock (107-117 Victoria Harbour Promenade, Docklands)

Hosted by the Melbourne Origami Group, Crafternoons is an afternoon’s worth of arts and crafts for people of all ages and of all skill levels.

This free event invites people of varying skills to head down to the Community Room in Library at the Dock to learn all about the Japanese art of paper folding: origami.

If you’re already working on something, bring it down to the event and finish it off or share it with others.

Basic paper and refreshments will be provided. But for those keen to work on paper that’s of higher quality, fancier paper will be on sale.

Movies Under the Stars
January 28 – 30 (6.30 – late) | Point Park (1 Point Park Crescent, Docklands VIC)

Melbourne loves its outdoor cinemas and this weekend, you can watch recent hits with Movies Under the Stars at Docklands.

Screening this weekend are the new James Bond film, Spectre (Friday, January 29), and Pixar’s emotional family film, Inside Out (Saturday. January 30).

While there are plenty of ways you can get there, one way that might entice you even more to head down is to take the free return ferry service which will run to and from Federation Square to Yarra’s Edge, Point Park.

Furthermore, the first 100 guests to each session will be rewarded with a free beanbag to sit and relax on for the remainder of the film! Beanbags can still be purchased however if you arrive late — they will be on hire at $8.00 each.

Zoo Twilights 2016
January 29 – March 12 (5.30 – late) | Melbourne Zoo (Elliott Avenue, Parkville)

Melbourne Zoo is full of wonderous sights but this weekend, you’ll also be able to see more than just animals.

Zoo Twilights 2016 invites visitors to enjoy local and international music artists all while giving you the opportunity to have a look around the zoo!

This Friday, you’ll be able to see Far from Folsom featuring Tex Perkins and the Tennessee Four with Rachel Tidd. The Saturday session with The Waifs, however, is sold out.

Tickets to this Friday’s show will set you back $65. All Zoo Twilights proceeds help Zoos Victoria fight wildlife extinction.
