MELBOURNE will host an important World Cup qualifying match-up between Australia and Japan on October 11 at Etihad stadium. Justin Lim has more.
Rejoice, all you soccer fans out there for the World Cup Qualifiers are coming to Victoria! The Socceroos will be taking on Japan on October 11 at Etihad Stadium for the Australian part of its 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifier campaign.
The major sporting event will no doubt attract visitors from all around Australia and Japan as they bare witness to two of Asian football’s fiercest rivals as they clash to secure a spot at the next World Cup in Russia.
In a statement to the press, Acting Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Philip Dalidakis, said “Australia and Japan always makes for a great match”.
“These two teams have history. Who could forget the 2006 FIFA World Cup?” Mr Dalidakis said.
The game Mr Dalikdais referred to was a group stage match where a young Tim Cahill, currently signed to and playing for Hangzhou Greentown FC, scored two thunderous goals to secure a comeback victory for the Socceroos.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was also excited for the event, saying that it will be “an enormous contest” and that “visitors from all over Australia and Japan will make this a great spectacle”.
