The Weekender: August 19 – 21

FUEL your inner femme fatale at IFFM2016, go treasure-hunting at Coburg, sample mouth-watering Asian street food, or improve your photography skills with other photoholics. Trinh Le suggests four things to do this weekend in Melbourne!

Indian Film Festival of Melbourne
Thursday, August 11 – Sunday, August 21 (Various times) | Various venues

A grand celebration of cinema from India and the subcontinent, the 2016 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) brings you an array of Bollywood movies that promise to get your feet tapping and your mouth humming, plus thought-provoking stories to take home!

Themed around female empowerment, this year’s festival celebrates “kick-ass, wonderful ladies, in cinema and beyond!” – in the words of Mitu Bhowmick Lange, IFFM Festival Director. “We’ll be highlighting women in cinema, as they strive for equality and empowerment,” the director added.

Movie-goers should expect an exciting schedule of Australian and world premieres, Q&A sessions with many Indian stars and filmmakers, masterclasses and panels with influential industry figures, and even a Bollywood dance competition.

We recommend Ekk Albela, THITHI, and if you’re a fan of short films, then there’s a dedicated screening session this weekend that showcases Amdavad Ma Famous, The New Girl In Class, 35MM, Spice Sisters, and so much more.

For more information, head to the IFFM2016’s official Facebook page, and book your tickets before they’re sold out!

There’s an old saying that goes, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”, and that’s basically the whole idea behind Coburg Trash & Treasure Market: to bring private buyers and sellers together in a vibrant market atmosphere. Stallholders simply bring their unwanted goods, crafts, hobbies etc. and treasure hunters are welcome to barter and haggle over those goods.

Stalls vary from owned-and-loved furniture, homegrown veggies, chic clothing, collectibles and a whole lot more. Imagine visiting several hundred garage sales at one gigantic outdoor bazaar!

A standard entry will set you back $1, while early-bird admission will cost $5.50. For more information, visit their official website.
