LOVE the adrenaline rush of chasing down leads and breaking stories? Our outgoing news editor Diane Leow is looking for a new hot shot editor to pass the baton on to. Find out how you can apply.
We consider our job done when our volunteers go on to find jobs in the media industry after graduation, and so we’re very pleased to say good riddance to our outgoing news editor Diane Leow who will be heading home to take up a digital journalist role in Singapore.
As such, we’re now on the hunt for a new news editor to take over Diane’s role.
As a news editor, you will be spearheading the news section of Meld Magazine’s website, which will require you to:
- Cast editorial vision for the news section, with a focus on breaking news and issues and other related topics including visa and migration, accommodation and living as well as career and employment news
- Work with reporters, photographers and videographers to develop content strategy and generate story ideas
- Assign and commission stories and organise for photoshoots and/or other graphics/illustrations
- Work with editors to finalise a weekly news list
- Take on some writing duties if there are no reporters available
- Carry out some investigative reporting when appropriate
- Provide guidance to reporters and any other assistance they may need, such as deciding on a story angle, questions to ask during interviews, where to look for resources, getting in touch with the right people
- Follow up with reporters to ensure copy is filed on time
- Follow up with photographers to ensure photos are ready
- Using WordPress, edit copy and include relevant hyperlinks, upload photos, write photo captions, headline and excerpts, setting the featured image and filling in category and post tags etc
- Be proficient in social media
- Be comfortable with basic Photoshop or other photo-editing skills
We will provide you training in using WordPress as well as basic Search Engine Optimisation know-how, and other competencies that would be useful in the digital newsroom.
As this is a senior position at Meld Magazine, it would be ideal if you could commit to two half days per week, on top of any time you may need to fulfil your duties. Hours are flexible and you are free to work from home when appropriate.
This position is unpaid, but is an excellent opportunity for final year university students and recent university graduates to apply their skills and knowledge in a practical working environment, continue learning and make some great contacts along the way. Meld’s volunteers have gone on to secure jobs locally and overseas in local government and companies such as Google, Private Media, News Limited, Channel NewsAsia, Malaysiakini, The Star Online, The Edge Malaysia, The Word Collective, Ogilvy, ING Direct and PwC.
To confirm your interest, please email a CV and cover letter, and recent academic transcripts to careers@meldmagazine.com.au by August 24, 2014.
