Chinese New Year Celebration

To celebrate the year of the snake, Chinatown comes alive with traditional and contemporary Chinese cultural festivities. The Chinese Museum will continue its tradition of hosting a private dragon awakening ceremony, then the world’s largest processional Chinese dragon, the Millennium Dragon, will parade through the city streets.

On the day, entry to the Chinese Museum will be free. See the Spring Festival exhibition, which explores the customs, foods and traditions of the festival as celebrated by Chinese families in China and abroad. Visitors will be able to discover the festival’s rich history, traditions and contemporary practices through images and artefacts, and an enormous paper snake made by hundreds of participants over a three–month period will also be exhibited. The Museum welcomes all to share the Chinese Cultural heritage of Melbourne’s Chinese community.
