Soccer fans rejoice! The AFC Asian Cup is coming to Australia and will take place in five different major cities next year.
The cities that will play host to AFC Asian Cup are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Newcastle.
There are approximately 2.5 million people of Asian heritage living in Australia and the AFC Asian Cup is a great opportunity to come together to celebrate multicultural diversity in Australia.
The Asian Cup will also help strengthen the relationships between Australia and participating countries, further enhancing Australia’s reputation in the long term for diplomatic and economic benefits that the Asian cup will generate.
Meanwhile in Melbourne, Gary Lee, the International Student and Youth Officer at the City of Melbourne, has been appointed as a community ambassador.
We want local community and sports groups to have a chat with us regarding any support they need,” said Gary.
He considers it “a great honour” to have been appointed.
“I am very humbled by the opportunity and see this as a chance to further expand my work to empower international students, this time through sport,” he told Meld.
Community ambassadors are actively encouraging people to go support the Socceroos and also support the country of their origin.
They are also reaching out to students and community groups that are enthusiastic about soccer and aim to bring them together or offer any help and support if they are planning or hosting soccer tournaments.
“We want local community and sports groups to have a chat with us regarding any support they need,” said Gary.
